This Week's Little Life Notes From Me to You

February is the shortest month, but can often seem the longest. At least here in Courtice Ontario the sun is shining. If you're still going at a slower pace, be sure to honour that and celebrate your body's rhythms.

In the article that follows, take note that most of the activities that support your health can be part of a slower, more thoughtful lifestyle. Look at the guidance and see what it includes that will enrich your life, it's beautiful that your body and mind thrive when you make connections with friends, eat tasty natural foods, and ensure time for rest and renewal.

A Quick Guide to Heart Health for a Long Life
by Francie Adamson

February is Heart Health Month, and as the sun begins to rise earlier and set later, we look forward to the promise of spring. It’s a good time to evaluate how you’re doing on your journey towards living a fulfilling and productive life now and through the years.

Cardiovascular disease continues to be a leading cause of death.

It includes conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and other heart-related issues.

In our family we already lost someone. Dave was robust and seemingly healthy and was planning to retire early, looking forward to living in the house he was building by the lake. As he was enjoying a beer with his brother and a friend, showing them the newly poured foundation, he suddenly collapsed.

He had a massive heart attack, and there was nothing anyone could do to save him.

These issues don’t occur suddenly, they take time, years, even decades to develop.

Taking care of your heart and cardiovascular system is crucial for overall well-being, and the time to start is now, before there are signs and symptoms.

Here's a concise guide that reviews the most important ways you can support your heart health.

Review the guide and acknowledge the ways you are already supporting your health, then choose one area to get to work on or improve.

Stay Active:

Engage in regular physical activity like walking, yoga, or even dancing.

Make it fun – find activities you enjoy to keep your heart pumping.

Healthy Eating Habits:

Opt for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Treat your heart to omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and nuts.

Manage Stress:

Incorporate stress-relief practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises.

Prioritize activities that bring you joy – it's good for the heart and soul.

Regular Check-ups:

Keep tabs on your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and overall heart health.

Regular check-ups help catch potential issues early on.

Adequate Sleep:

Ensure you get enough quality sleep; it's essential for heart health.

Create a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation.

Hydration Matters:

Stay well-hydrated for optimal heart function.

Water is your heart's best friend – make it a habit to drink enough.

Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol:

Smoking and excessive alcohol can take a toll on your heart.

Cut down on these habits for a healthier cardiovascular system.

Social Connections:

Cultivate positive relationships and surround yourself with a supportive community.

Social connections contribute to a happy heart.

Remember, small changes can make a big difference. It's about finding joy in the journey to a healthier heart!💖
