It's 'Yes! You Can do Yoga' Month at Joy Core

Let's face it, any time of year is a good time to resolve to eat better, exercise more and give yourself the time and care to be healthy.

Neglecting this self-maintenance is going to cost you, and that cost rises faster than inflation the older you get. The biggest villain is the relentlessly demanding modern world that offers too many distractions that keep you focused outside yourself rather than on your purpose and joy. This causes stress that ages you before your time.

Your body is a gift and you only have one, running yourself ragged will not serve you in the long run. If you're busy and pulled in all directions, whatever shape you're in, you'll benefit from a breath focused yoga practice that's designed just for you.

Chair Yoga- Adapt to Your Body's Needs to Get Started
by Frances Adamson

One question that often comes up when people inquire about yoga therapy is ‘can I do it if… I’m not flexible, my knees don’t bend, or I have chronic pain?” This is what sets yoga therapy apart from mainstream yoga- the answer is YES!

The father of modern yoga, Krishnamacharya, famously said “if you can breathe you can do yoga”.

Recently one student, Krista, had a minor operation on her foot and she gamely attended her class and did the yoga seated, using a footrest to elevate her feet when needed. It was a great choice because even a few weeks of inactivity can reduce muscle mass and make recovery slower- and motion is lotion as they say!

There’s a host of ways to make yoga accessible for people who are starting from a place of inflexibility or lack strength.

Case in point, my student Judy, A retired lady and quite independent in attitude, needs a cane to walk and is at risk for a fall which is very serious at her age. When she first joined the Joy Core program she had difficulty getting down to the floor and up again. With guidance she’s organizing her body in a better way and also has more confidence since she's been working on this move in a safe place- now she can get up and down with greater ease.

You can do chair yoga if you’re injured or have chronic conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis.

Many of my students regularly use a chair in different ways to avoid aggravating knee, wrist or hip conditions. When students come to me with mild or even severe pain, most find permanent improvement in their body and reduce bodily pain. Bonus, emotional pain is also lessened as it follows the same neural pathways.

Whatever age and physical condition you’re in right now, it’s important to look forward and start training for the future.

On average we lose 17% of our strength and aerobic capacity every decade. It is possible to reverse this decline with dedication to a health regime including exercise and proper nutrition.

Adding yoga therapy to your routine is an effective way to maintain strength and breathing function so you can be more active doing the things you love in the years to come. Chair yoga can be a start if you need an easier, more supported way to begin, and the benefits are pain management and improved mobility.

Turn back your biological clock by moving your body mindfully and including breathing and meditation techniques for a longer healthspan.
