This Week's Little Life Notes From Me to You

My sister has seedlings growing already, and I made my first trip to the greenhouse and bought primula to brighten up the kitchen. It's time to plan the garden and review what didn't work- too many cabbages, and I didn't realize okra got 6 feet tall, oops!

Interestingly, an article in my news feed said home gardens were less energy efficient than commercial operation. That seems highly unlikely, especially if you compost and make your own fertilizer! I use Comfry- Bocking 14 to add nutrients, as it's non-invasive.  If you're in Durham and want some let me know!

Decoding the Dieting Myths: Truths for Achieving a Healthier Body Weight

Chances are good your social media is feeding you all the latest studies in how to eat healthy- how do you sift through it all to learn what will be best for your body?

Recently google offered an article about fasting, the title stated that short-term fasting had little benefit besides reducing calories. The study cited involved 25 participants fasting on water for 7 days.

This highlights that social media is misleading.

The science on fasting is just beginning. You must read through to the end of the article to learn this, if you didn’t you’ll be left with the impression that this was a definitive study. Social media often reports the results of small studies and proclaims them as truth.

Large, double-blind studies on nutrition and eating habits are on animals, mostly mice. This is because it’s almost impossible to control what people eat and they can forget or misrepresent their diet, so studies with humans are small.

Fact: diet and nutrition studies are limited

Some good information comes from analyzing the health and diet of large populations. That’s how we know the Mediterranean diet is healthy. But is drinking red wine really optimal for health? We don’t know for sure, maybe the negative effects are hidden because the over-all diet is good.

There are three major food groups, protein, fat and carbohydrates.

  • Animal protein is known to be more easily utilized in the body than vegetable protein.
  • Saturated fats are known to be unhealthy in large quantities.
  • Carbohydrates are best consumed unrefined for more nutrients and fiber.

This leaves a lot of options according to preference and values. The truth is that in our culture food is abundant, processed foods are convenient, and the general population is over-weight if not obese.

We need to cut through the inaccurate information over-load and find a structured way to maintain a healthy weight in a sustainable way.

All successful diets involve calorie reduction.

  • Intermittent fasting reduces the amount of food you eat by restricting when you eat.
  • Eliminating certain foods, like meat or bread reduces the amount  you eat typically for 3 months.
  • Calorie counting and meal planning controls portion size, reducing our energy intake.

At first these methods work, unfortunately, we tend to get back to our usual calorie intake by gradually increasing how much we eat and gain the weight back.

People report they are energized and feel healthier when they eat less.

Whatever diet you choose, your habits and calorie intake have to change permanently and it must be sustainable for you. This means there’s more to the equation than calorie control.

Today’s lifestyle is often sedentary, stressful, and so busy we have little time to truly consider our choices. So we end up leading lives that aren’t what we want or intended to live and this unhappiness can manifest as addiction, one of which is over-eating.

At the end of the day, lasting change only happens when you adapt a new you moving forward.

One of the most reputable and widely used fact-checking websites is Snopes.com. They meticulously investigate and debunk urban legends, rumors, and misinformation across a wide range of topics, from politics to health to viral internet stories.

For health-related misinformation specifically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) websites are excellent resources.
