This Week's Little Life Notes From Me to You
I hope you are having a wonderful summer and and that the massive rains this week didn't wreak any havoc in your life. We are high and dry and it's amazing is how the earth soaks it all up. So watching carefully Ontario's plans for the green belt which protect Toronto.
Today's article features a student who made incredible strides through a regular and easy yoga practice. Her transformation though, was a steady progression over the course of more than a year. Perhaps you'll relate to her story, it's common to have beliefs that keep us over-worked and under-nourished in spirit.
Be sure to check out the offer that follows to start changing your health and outlook from the bottom up through the body and breath. Here's the link to Book Your Appointment now- I've opened up my schedule next week to see if we're the right fit.
From Burnout to Bliss: A Journey of Work-Life Balance and Fulfillment
by Francie Adamson
I’d like you to meet Deb.
She loved her job as an OR nurse, in fact she was passionate about it, her family was also important, and she always put these responsibilities before taking care of herself. When she hurt her back moving, she carried on putting in long hours at work and in the home.
She pushed herself past her body’s limits and her back problem became worse. Finally she went to an orthopedic surgeon who told her that she had to stop working immediately and it was unlikely she’d be able to go back.
Which is when she she came to see me. She hoped that yoga would be able to mend her. It wasn’t just that she loved her job, it was important to Deb to always be working in one way or another- her identity as a worthwhile person depended on it.
It’s not uncommon for people to feel that their work gives them self worth, and when they get tired or injured they ignore their body's warning signs- I imagine you can also think of a time when you did that.
The symptoms start off in a small way and gradually get worse. You hope it will get better and take a wait and see approach. It may have happened before, or something similar, and you got better eventually after all.
Unfortunately, between ageing and having the same problem again and again, many people don’t heal as well as they once did.
It’s important to stay in touch with your body and be aware of the aches and pains when they occur, and to get appropriate treatment from a doctor or other health specialist sooner rather than later.
Yoga Therapy helps you prevent and recover from injury and illness. The time spent doing it will minimize time lost from work as well as fueling productivity and creativity since you feel more alert and energetic.
This is accomplished through the yoga exercise, and also through lifestyle and habit coaching to fit your needs. You move your body in a variety of ways and so you’ll notice when things are off and take steps to prevent it getting any worse.
- Yoga prevents injury because it strengthens, stretches, and mobilizes your body.
- It reduces mental stress which eases tension, minimizing injury and illness.
- Yoga improves self-awareness so you take it easy instead of pushing your limits.
- It can improve sleep which is necessary for your body to repair itself.
- Mindful breathing and meditation aids your body and brain’s ability to repair DNA.
For my student Deb, we worked with her body where it was and on mindset to adapt to the loss of her working life as an OR nurse and her changed circumstances.
She went from fear and uncertainty on how she would cope physically and emotionally to feeling excited about life and her new direction:
“Everything in my life has changed in just three months. After years of being a caregiver, mother, nurse, and wife, I'm learning to take care of me. With Francie’s expertise and constant guidance I have turned a new Leaf. I'm able to prioritize, plan, and implement a lifestyle that is peaceful and fulfilling. I've been able to do this with Francie's help, she has given me the tools and encouragement to become a stronger person.”

Since participating in the Joy Core Program she’s enjoying her life, spending time playing with her young grandchildren, and living pain-free. She learned to be comfortable with being at ease: not being constantly busy and overwhelmed with things to do.
I call this being grounded in Ease. Life doesn’t have to be a constant grind. Your day can include difficult tasks which are fulfilling or necessary, but taking time for rest and renewal is not only enjoyable it keeps you healthy so you have energy when you need it.
The benefits of gaining and maintaining better health are clear-
Feeling good gives you the ability to do work you love and spent time with the people you love.
From getting proper sleep, lowered immune function, weight gain or loss, finding and maintaining the right balance between work and leisure will create joyful experiences in life.
