Francie and her Dad

Thinking of Dad on This Father's Day and Thankful for Him and All Fathers Everywhere

My heart is full of appreciation for the fathering men do. Both my kid's dad's- biological and step-father- have been devoted as parents and I'm very grateful for that. I was really lucky to have had Arthur Adamson for a father, who was more traditional but no less caring.

My dad saw Art as his highest calling, and it was wonderful to be raised by an artist.

He was also a philosopher and a poet. He loved reading to us and my favorites were 'The Narnia Chronicles' by C.S. Lewis. I remember asking him as a little kid if Heaven was real, and what it was like. He told me it was whatever I imagined to be- and I was happy to imagine Narnia and flying unicorns.

He also told me that the Inuit were the first ones on the moon, not the American astronauts. These were not common beliefs. So he taught me to question everything that was normally considered real.

An artist learns to see the world in order to translate it.

One of his greatest gifts was his ability to see people as they are. In his poem ‘Song for Frances’ he writes:

“My daughter, tree whose leaves are laughter, Dance is fire on water”.

He saw me and everyone else as ever-changing beings, moving like leaves or flickering fire.

He didn’t talk much, and I learned silence from him.

I used to cuddle up to him on the couch as a child, and the feel of a scratchy wool sweater, the crackle of a fresh newspaper or the sound of a hockey game on T.V. brings back the memory of his warmth and safety.

When my dad got sick it made me question what life is all about. In the grand scheme of things are we just blips? What in the end do our hopes, dreams and passions amount to?

Each of us is intimately woven into the fabric of existence.

Dad was my mentor and teacher, and he touched many lives, family, friends, students and colleagues. Dad’s heart and soul is a part of me and everything, we all are.

I love you dad, hope I see you in Narnia some day.

Choosing books is one of my least favorite activities. I often get my husband Doug to pick out books but he seldom chooses fiction. Let's share the best summer reads with each other- fiction or not. Let me know if you are anticipating a new release or have old favorites you love to turn to, reply to this email.
