Loneliness, Depression, and Anxiety Can Affect Heart Health
by Francie Adamson

One of the many ways that modern life has impacted our health is the increase in social isolation causing loneliness, depression and anxiety. It’s a myth that humans ‘should’ be independent; we evolved as pack animals, and for millennia lived together in close knit tribes.

My own experience of isolation began when I moved from Vancouver to Scarborough.

Being a stay-at-home mother raising two small children, I went from a co-op living situation with like-minded neighbors to a city where I knew no one and where nothing was in walking distance except the mall. When my marriage broke up and I moved to the Danforth in East York it was actually better for me as I had community centres and social resources available.

Here’s a break down of how loneliness, depression, and anxiety can impact heart health.

Loneliness: Studies have shown that chronic loneliness can contribute to increased blood pressure, inflammation, and weakened immune function, all of which can negatively impact heart health.

Depression: is linked to changes in the body's stress response system.

These changes include increased levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can raise blood pressure and heart rate over time.

Additionally, depression is associated with inflammation and changes in blood clotting, which can contribute to the development of heart disease.

Anxiety: Chronic worry and panic attacks can trigger physiological responses in the body.

These include increased heart rate and blood pressure, which, if frequent or prolonged, can strain the cardiovascular system.

Chronic anxiety is also linked to inflammation and changes in heart function, increasing the risk of conditions like heart disease and hypertension over time.

Social isolation and emotional struggle often lead to unhealthy choices.

Emotional coping mechanisms like overeating, excessive drinking, or a sedentary lifestyle add to the risk of cardiovascular problems. People feeling lonely, depressed, and anxious are more likely to engage in behaviors detrimental to heart health, such as smoking, overeating, or neglecting regular exercise.

One out of four people faces loneliness and mental health issues.

While you can address these issues through social support, therapy, and healthy coping strategies to improve mental well-being and positively impact heart health, it’s important is to make relationships and community connections part of your over-all life strategy before a crisis hits.

The nuclear family is a fragile social support: developing a broader community network is vital.

With the modern world providing a wealth of distractions that keep us isolated, making small changes is the key to expanding your circle. If you have a hobby, extend your efforts to meeting fellow hobbyists regularly: you can also volunteer, or take a class.

The key is to get out there and try different activities or events that align with your interests. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to new people – you never know who you might meet!

Prioritizing a variety of relationships leads to better mental and physical health and a happier, longer life.
