This Week's Little Life Notes From Me to You
I’m on my way to the beach today to enjoy sand, water, and sun. I spent every summer there as a child and it’s my favorite place in all the world. I’ll be enjoying gorgeous sunsets like these, and may be in time to pick blueberries on Elk Island!
My mother was an enthusiastic blueberry picker, I have many memories of wading or canoeing across to the island and hiking into the much cooler grey-green forest of tall pine trees, the sound of cicadas buzzing. I hope it's not too late in the season to pick a pail or two and make a pie for one of our BBQ’s.
Have a wonderful week!
What Makes Your Eyes Light Up?
by Francie Adamson
As summer reaches its fullest bloom it’s a wonderful time to reflect on happiness and what that means for you.
Like most things in life, taking time to plan and envision what you want to happen makes having that experience more likely. In the case of happiness, it’s most often the small, day to day things that have the most impact on our feelings of joy in life.
"Happiness is not the destination, happiness is the path"- Buddha
There’s been times in my life when the pressure of life has overwhelmed me: my job, or lack one, raising kids, renovating my house. Most often I was trying to achieve something difficult and was focused outside myself.
At times like these I might snap at my kids or get in a fight with my husband and I would feel even more unhappy. As a yoga teacher, a specialist in creating peace and calm within, I felt like a failure.
My own yoga teacher would suggest going for a walk out in nature. She was always so unjudgmental, understanding that we are all on a journey and subject to pressure from inside and without.
I learned that she’s right, a daily walk boosts my mood, and being by water, especially a lake has a special power to make me happy. I try to make it to the beach once a week with my family, I’m so lucky that we live so near to one.
Humans are social beings, and at our core is a warm and beating heart, and it's small, simple things like a shared laugh or a hug that brings us most joy.
Take some time today to journal what activities you do daily or weekly that make you happiest. Who are the people you enjoy being with, who support you and make you feel you’re needed and loved?
A smile on your face goes a long way and is an act of kindness that uplifts others' feelings too.
Happiness is not an indulgence, how you feel impacts your body, your mind, and everyone else around you. So be selfless and plan something that will light up those eyes and that smile! :)
