Lettuce Planter

This Weeks Little Life Notes From Me to You

I'm getting a lot of joy from harvesting vegetables, and getting the nutrients from organic produce is a bonus. It's heaven to have the fresh taste and know the nutrients came from your very own garden.

This salad bowl was very easy and it's been providing leafy greens all May. They need part-full sun and will tend to go to seed in late July and August. That would be the best time to start seedlings for some fall lettuce. Plant 4 to a medium sized container using organic potting mix that ill retain water well.

Harvest the outer leaves- no need to cut down the whole plant

Take the largest leaves every couple of days and enjoy!

What are your creative successes? Let me know by replying to this email, I'd love to hear from you.

Which is Your Core Belief: Are we all alone- or are we all in this together?

It came as a shock when my friend Joan told me with complete certainty that we can only really rely on ourselves in this life, that we are all alone.

The knee-jerk reaction that immediately came up was- “Oh no, we are all in this together!”

Giving and receiving is a foundational part of the human experience as humans we evolved to be part of a community. It’s central to how we survive as individuals and as a collective, in fact, some cultures don’t have the word ‘thank you’ in their language.

Sharing is so much a part of their culture that it isn’t necessary to express gratitude.

Our experience of working together as a collective has been slowly eroded over the past couple hundred years with the advancement of technologies. While most folks used to live in the countryside and worked together in extended families and villages to grow food and create goods, the coming of factories changed the landscape.

The changing work-world meant country jobs declined and as people moved into larger cities it’s become harder to build a network that you can trust.

More and more it seems like it’s every person for themselves.

You learn to invest your energy primarily in people and activities that think are the most important to your own security and happiness. Each good deed is counted up and balanced out directly back to us. Relationships are gained and lost as we mentally add up whether or not so and so has paid back our investments.

In the end these calculations of reciprocity reinforce the belief that we are all alone.

With this world view we are the sum total of what we can add to society and all our relationships. Obviously, you can only rely on yourself, take care of yourself first, and save up resources to ensure you’re safe and comfortable.

On the other hand, if we are all in this together, you can feel free to jump in and help or interfere with almost any situation. You may become spread too thin or stressed out because you try to make everyone happy all the time, despite all the evidence against this being possible.

It’s complicated, but the truth is that we find our way together.

If you have ever hit rock bottom, you know that helping hands come from unexpected places. Your world crumbles as you reach for supports that you thought were there, and you’re caught by surprise at the kindness and support of someone you barely knew.

This grace comes to us all regardless of what we believe.

Being able to see past the beliefs that you have is the goal. Start by identifying where you stand and so you know where your decisions and actions are coming from. You can do this by getting to know yourself through the practice of yoga.

Which world view do you hold- alone or together? Please send me your comment in a reply because I would love to hear from you!
