My Grandmother’s Story

I remember Elora as a little white haired woman who smiled a lot and didn’t talk much. She had a presence of authority and always worked. When I knew her she ran the church thrift store and made quilts from old coats.

Back in the day girls from homesteads didn’t usually go and get degrees before coming back to their families and getting married. That’s just what she did though, my gramma.

She insisted that she have the skills to work and earn money before she would make a home and family with her childhood sweetheart. Pretty radical for the 1920's. Her first choice, teaching, was two years, so she took nursing, only one year and more affordable.

Grampa, bless his soul, loved the land and his horses who worked the land with him. In the end, forced to leave the homestead due to the depression, what broke his heart was selling his team.

Moving to town the couple found work in the local hospital. Gramma Elora rose to be head nurse, and Grampa worked as a custodian.

Together they raised two girls and two boys, all of whom went on to get University degrees. Of the 16 grand children 15 also earned degrees.

Thank You Gramma, for paving the way for the women of our family.

Happy International Women's Day!
