HAPPY CANADA DAY!
I've been reflecting on Canada's achievements and what comes to my mind is the rise of indigenous artists and musicians and their accomplishments. It's a reflection of their creativity and resilience as well as the values and inclusiveness of our society.
It was on the radio program 'Reclaimed', on CBC Radio, that I first heard the amazing new music coming from the North of Canada, indigenous artists expressing themselves through traditional cultural combined with modern rock and hip hop.
What makes you proud to be Canadian?
Tanya Tagaq: Inuk throat singer from Nunavut
Just one example among many talented indigenous artists, Tanya Tagaq, an Inuk throat singer from Nunavut, has become known around the world for her innovative approach to throat singing in modern music genres.
Tanya grew up immersed in her Inuit culture and learned throat singing from her grandmother and other Inuit elders. Throat singing was traditionally practiced by women as a form of vocal game or competition.
Brilliantly incorporating the throat singing into contemporary music genres, blending it with elements of punk, electronica, and avant-garde music, Tanya’s performances are raw, intense, and innovative as she crosses traditional boundaries and blasts away stereotypes associated with Indigenous music.
Her music is celebrated for its fearless exploration of themes like Indigenous identity, environmentalism, and social justice.
Beyond her musical achievements, Tanya Tagaq is a voice for Indigenous rights, environmental conservation, and the empowerment of Indigenous women. She uses her platform to address issues such as colonialism, climate change, and the preservation of Indigenous languages and traditions.
Tanya's creativity has inspired a new generation of Indigenous artists to reclaim and revitalize their cultural heritage in unique and modern ways. She's leading the way as she pushes boundaries and challenges stereotypes, bringing awareness and appreciation for Inuit culture and throat singing to the world.
Cool Resource for You to Explore Creativity
A great resource for you is 'The Artists Way: A spiritual path to Higher Creativity' by Julia Cameron. My favorite takeaway was the morning pages- she gives plenty of writing prompts, and one of them is to express gratitude for the good things in your life. If you're not an artist, you can check out the other books she's written, for business people, parents and spiritual seekers.
